The dragon dance is a festive tradition in China. It was originally performed to please the dragon, which, according to Chinese mythology is the god of water, and to ask for rainfall during times of drought. Gradually, it became a dance form for festive occasions, usually during the Spring and Lantern festivals.
The dragons, usually ranging from several meters to more than 100-metres long, are mainly made of bamboo, wood, rattan, cloth and paper. There are poles attached to the belly of the dragon which performers hold to raise the beast and start the grand dance to the beat of drums.
The lions dance is another important tradition, usually performed with the dragon dance on auspicious occasions, and is believed to bring good luck and happiness. The lion dance requires far more wushu (kung fu) skills than the dragon dance. There are usually two performers playing the dragon, one holding the head and leading the dance while the other plays the body and tail. The performers hide under a cloth attached to the head.
