Japan Trip with Internet and my cellphone

HI! We are going to Japan next month and would like to be able to use our cell phones while there.
While in China last fall, we were able to buy sim cards to use there easily and cheaply.
Also want to get online everytime.
Is that possible in Japan?

While most newer mobile phone models can be used in Japan, many older phones may not work due to different technologies. Most importantly, there is no GSM network in Japan, so GSM-only phones do not work. There are three options for how you can use your smartphone or tablet: use Wi-Fi only, rent a data-only SIM, or use your phone via roaming or renting a local phone.

In my experience,

you can bring any internet-enabled phones in japan, but your calls and text messages wont work much.

You could also rent a phone you're there.
