Has anyone traveled around Assisi with a focus on places associated with St. Francis?
Does anyone know of a travel guide for hire in Assisi?

We've been to Assisi a few times. It's easily accessible by bus, train, or driving - we've done all three. Depending on where you are coming from, how long you'd like to tour, and at what price - there are many , many options for guided tours in this area.

If you train, be prepared to take a bus or taxi from the lower level (new part of the city where the train station is) up the hill to the Old Section of town. You cannot walk this! Good Luck...
