To start with French bread is absolutely gorgeous, baked and bought daily, and there are many varieties, from French baguette, to brioche and croissants.
France is the country in the world where there is the greatest variety of cheese, there are over 1000, and some are mind blowingly delicious and melt in the mouth whilst others are extremely strong tasting and smelling.
The French like cooking with super fresh ingredients and will make dishes that take hours to cook or to prepare to achieve the best possible flavour. Modern chefs have introduced all sorts of combinations of flavours so it is impossible to name a "best dish", but here are some dishes that are extremely popular.
Boeuf Bourguignon (beef stewed in red wine)
Blanquette de veau (veal in white sauce)
Coq au vin (chicken in red wine)
Cassoulet (a dish made with beans, sausages and preserved duck or goose)
Bouillabaisse (a stew of mixed Mediterranean fish, tomatoes, and herbs)
Ratatouille (a vegetable stew with olive oil, aubergine, courgette, bell pepper, tomato, onion and garlic)
Steak frites (steak and fries)
Poulet frites (chicken and fries)
Poule au pot (stewed chicken served with boiled vegetables and rice)
Moules frites (mussels cooked with white wine sweet onions and a mix of herbs served with a side dish of fries). Sometimes cream is poured on top of the mussels.
Gougère (cheese in choux pastry)
Quiche lorraine (savoury tart)
Boudin blanc (Delicate flavored sausage similar to bockwurst)
Choucroute garnie (Pickled cabbage served with a variety of sausages, ham and chicken pieces)
Poulets de Bresse (chickens that have been fed on secial food and are amazingly tender)
Homard Thermidor (Lobster served with a piquant red sauce)
