Anyone have experiences with this? I am thinking of going to get my braces removed and enjoy some travel while at it.

Medical tourism in Costa Rica?

Honestly I haven't heard much of it from Costa Rica, but I have heard of it in many other places. It seems to be getting increasingly popular, and it's a shame that there is a market for it.
Brace removal is a little unusual though, I thought that that was normally all handled by one dentist.

I can vouch for the medical/dental system here in Costa Rica, it is quite good. The World Health organization rates the Costa Rican health care system ahead of the US.
That said, if I required something major, I would prefer it done in the US.
But for routine procedures Costa Rica beats the US in almost every category!!!!
My favorite example of how much more practical the system is here: In many Pharmacies they have a Dr on site. If you have something wrong, you walk into the pharmacy, you ask for the Dr., the Dr. consults with you on the spot, you buy your meds and you are on your way in a matter of minutes.
But on topic: There are scores of compitent bi-Lingual dentists in Costa Rica. You can expect to pay about 30% what you would pay in the States!!!!Greetings From Costa Rica!!!!!

Costa Rica is Central America's jewel. It's an oasis of calm among its turbulent neighbors and an ecotourism heaven, making it one of the best places to experience the tropics with minimal impact. It's also mostly coastline, which means great surfing, beaches galore and a climate built for laziness. And, a very nice setting for medical tourism.
Costa Rica's enlightened approach to conservation has ensured that lush jungles are home to playful monkeys, languid sloths, crocodiles, countless lizards, poison-dart frogs and a mind-boggling assortment of exotic birds, insects and butterflies. Meanwhile, endangered sea turtles nest on both coasts and cloud forests protect elusive birds and jungle cats.
Costa Rica is located in Central America and can be reached from most US cities within 7 to 10 hours.

Medical tourism (MT) is defined as patient movement from highly developed nations to less developed areas of the world for medical care by bypassing services offered in their own communities. Medical tourism is different from the traditional model of international medical travel where patients generally journey from less developed nations to major medical centers in highly developed countries for medical treatment that is unavailable in their own communities. While the general definition of the MT above covers most of the aspects of the phenomenon, there is no international consensus yet on the name of the phenomenon. MT is often related to globalisation and neo-liberal healthcare policies which in this case considered to undermine the quality and quantity of the services available to middle class in home countries.
