  • Pripyat and the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone

For those wishing to participate in a special trip to Pripyat and the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. 27.09.09

Pripyat. This word causes the unique associations in each of us. At once we shall exclude for whom they are reduced only to the place name of the river proceeding on territory of Ukraine. We shall recollect people, for which Pripyat – the house or a battlefield with the invisible enemy – radiation. Their associations are full of bitterness, disappointments and pains. There are still we, whose life has been never directly connected with City and the Zone. But aspiration not only to know history, and and to manage to experience it pushes on an original feat – to overcome in a different degree illness storming in us a radiophobia and to touch to tragedy not only separately taken city or the country, but also all mankind.

It is impossible to remain indifferent to picturesque landscapes of the Ukrainian Polesye and enigmatic silence of the thrown villages. It is impossible not to be terrified for a huge monument of human carelessness – to "Sarcophagus". It is necessary to hear breath of Pripyat. Cities which already more than twenty years live in loneliness. Which understands us and accepts such what we are. Us going to them from all world behind beautiful kinds from a roof шестнадцатиэтажки and graffiti on its buildings, us, admirers of game «Stalker» and simply were interested and sympathizing. The city waits for us – welcoming smiling, squinting weak-sighted eye-sockets of windows, absorbs sides of houses our shadows, gropes hands of prospectuses our traces. Glance to it in soul. Experience history. Understand, that for you the word "Pripyat" means.

Hello) Actually, we make such tours every 2 weeks, except winter, when it becomes hard to walk through the lost city, due to the snow. Also it is possible to make an individual trip for a small group ( 5-15 persons) or a 2-3 day trip, with staying in a small hotel in Chernobyl or Slavutich.
As regards the radiation level, well,it still remains higher than than the normal. But level of radiation contamination is not similar in all places in the city and the exclusion zone: there are both-"dirty" and "clean" places. In any case, our specialists will never lead a group to the "dirty" places, away from the exclusion zone all pass the control. Total dose, which is theoretically available for 5 hours in Pripyat is equivalent to 1 X-ray in a hospital or 1 flight in an airplane. Subject to all rules and regulations, the risk is minimal.
If you are interested in specific figures, I'll write them later.

12 microsievert per trip (subject, if we are 6 hours in Pripyat). This does not exceed the annual standard.
          Quote one of our guides:
"Doses are not rough, and quite specific (for me, anyway dosimeter is always with me). Dosimeter considers the entire year. In any case, more 1mSv for the year does not work. And this, as you understand, perfectly normal annual dose.
I am in the Zone on average once a month. And not in those relatively pure, places where pripyatcom lead their groups.
And with all this, my annual dose of 1 mSv ... Pick up a calculator and calculate: the average dose rate is obtained 0.11 mSv / h. ..
... mean background in the city is from 1 to 5micSv/h (100-500micR/h) in some places 50micSv/h (5000micR/h) "

I try to be careful using mico and mili, in my country we usually use roentgens instead of sieverts)) ....I guess,I made no mistakes in my calculations:rolleyes
